Sustainability — Blue Capital Indonesia’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact

Sustainability as Our Business Model

For Blue Capital Indonesia, sustainability is not a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative or a separate department; it is the fundamental principle upon which our entire business model is built. We operate from the core belief that long-term, superior financial returns can only be achieved through business practices that actively regenerate ecosystems and create equitable value for communities. Our commitment is measurable, transparent, and integrated into every stage of our investment process, as defined by our methodology.

Environmental Commitments: A Regenerative Approach

We aim to move beyond simply ‘minimizing harm’ to actively improving the health of Indonesia’s marine environments.

  • Climate Positive Operations: We go beyond carbon neutral. We measure our entire operational footprint—including all travel for due diligence—and offset 150% of our emissions through a partnership with a verified VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) certified REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project protecting vital rainforests in Kalimantan.
  • War on Plastic Pollution: Every company in our portfolio is required to implement a time-bound plan to eliminate all single-use plastics from their operations. Furthermore, we directly fund community-based waste management systems in our project locations, such as establishing ‘bank sampah’ (waste banks) in villages near Labuan Bajo.
  • Direct Ecosystem Restoration Fund: We commit 2% of our annual management fees to a dedicated fund for proactive restoration projects. This fund is managed in partnership with local NGOs and communities. Current initiatives include coral reef restoration with the LINI Foundation in North Bali and mangrove replanting programs in the coastal areas of West Papua to enhance blue carbon sinks.

Social & Community Commitments: Empowering People

Our investments are designed to create lasting, positive social change and empower the coastal communities who are the primary stewards of the marine environment.

  • Mandatory Local Employment & Skills Transfer: Our investment agreements stipulate a minimum of 80% local employment. More importantly, we mandate clear, funded pathways for local staff to advance into skilled and management positions through vocational training and leadership programs.
  • Community Development & Benefit Sharing: We implement a transparent ‘1% for the Community’ model, where 1% of the gross revenue from each project is contributed directly to a community-managed fund. This fund is used for projects chosen by the community itself, such as scholarships, local health clinic (Puskesmas) improvements, or clean water infrastructure.
  • Preservation of Cultural Heritage: We actively support the preservation of local culture and traditional knowledge. Our tourism projects prioritize sourcing from local artisans, featuring traditional architecture and cuisine, and supporting local cultural events, ensuring that economic development reinforces rather than erodes cultural identity.

Governance & Transparency: Upholding Trust

We hold ourselves accountable to our investors, partners, and the public through radical transparency.

  • Annual Public Impact Report: We publish an annual, publicly accessible impact report that details our progress against our ESG targets. This report is audited by an independent third party to ensure its accuracy and objectivity.
  • Stakeholder Advisory Council: We maintain a non-fiduciary advisory council composed of representatives from local communities, partner NGOs, and scientific experts to provide continuous feedback and hold us accountable to our mission.

This comprehensive approach ensures our investments create value that is shared, sustainable, and truly regenerative.
